5 Benefits of Cooking with Rapeseed Oil

Posted on

Rapeseed oil has become a popular choice in kitchens across the UK and Ireland – and for good reason.  Did you know that we were Finalist from BBC Food and Farming Awards 2026 this was a huge privilege and they saw how we did things outstanding in our field! More photos in separate blog.

Versatile, naturally low in saturated fat and suitable for everything from dressings and marinades to roasting, baking and frying, it’s an incredibly useful everyday cooking oil.

At Broighter Gold, we grow the rapeseed on our family farm at Broglasco before cold pressing the seeds to produce our distinctive golden oil.

But what makes rapeseed oil such a good choice?

What is rapeseed oil?

Rapeseed belongs to the brassica family of plants – the same family as broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower.

Once harvested, our rapeseed is cold pressed. This means the seeds are mechanically pressed to extract the oil, producing the distinctive golden colour and naturally nutty flavour of Broighter Gold.

Here are five reasons to consider making cold-pressed rapeseed oil part of your everyday cooking.

1. Naturally low in saturated fat

One of the main nutritional benefits of rapeseed oil is that it is naturally low in saturated fat.

Replacing saturated fats in your diet with unsaturated fats can help maintain normal blood cholesterol levels, making rapeseed oil a useful everyday alternative to cooking fats that are higher in saturated fat.

2. High in unsaturated fats

Rapeseed oil is naturally high in unsaturated fats, including monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats.

These are often referred to as the ‘good fats’ and form an important part of a healthy, balanced diet.

Rapeseed oil also naturally contains Omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids.

3. A natural source of Vitamin E

Rapeseed oil contains Vitamin E, an antioxidant that helps protect the body's cells from oxidative stress.

Vitamin E occurs naturally in a variety of foods, including nuts, seeds and vegetable oils, making rapeseed oil another simple way of including it as part of a varied diet.

4. Ideal for everyday cooking

One of the biggest advantages of rapeseed oil is its versatility.

It can be used for:

  • Roasting
  • Frying
  • Baking
  • Marinades
  • Salad dressings
  • Dips
  • Sauces

Its relatively high smoke point also makes it suitable for higher-temperature cooking.

That means you don't need a different oil for every job in the kitchen – a good-quality rapeseed oil can take you from a salad dressing to a Sunday roast.

5. Cold pressed for flavour

Cold pressing allows us to create an oil with a distinctive golden colour and naturally nutty flavour.

Our Original Cold Pressed Rapeseed Oil can be used as an everyday cooking oil, while our range of infused oils provides an easy way to introduce additional flavour into dishes.

Depending on what you're cooking, flavoured rapeseed oils can work particularly well with roasted vegetables, pasta, meat, fish, salads, marinades and dipping breads.

From our field to your kitchen

For us, there's another important part of the Broighter Gold story.

Our oil starts in the fields of our family farm.

The Kane family has farmed at Broglasco for six generations, and Broighter Gold grew from a diversification project on the farm into the range of cold-pressed rapeseed oils we produce today.

Growing the crop and producing the oil ourselves means there is a genuine connection between the field, the finished bottle and the food you put on your table.

Whether you're roasting, frying, baking, dressing a salad or simply looking for an easy way to add more flavour to a dish, cold-pressed rapeseed oil is one of the most versatile ingredients you can keep in your kitchen.

Good food doesn't need to be complicated – sometimes it starts with simply choosing the right ingredients.
